Work Placement Documentation & Evaluation

I have been in contact and had a series of conversations with A Leeds based photographer Jon Boyes. The conversation started as I was looking at his website and I contacted him asking for advice and possibly work experience. Jon Boyes gave me a lot of useful information and advice. It was a turning point and he gave me a lot of food for thought about getting to the point of being a photographer’s assistant and how you go about it. He also gave me a lot of resources and websites to have a look at. On a professional level he gave me tips about how to present myself and to approach a photographer with what my skills are and how I can be of great help to him or her.

I’m also on a regular basis emailing photographers based in Leeds to get work experience or for them to allow me to observe a shoot.

In terms of clients, throughout the professional brief I worked with a number of musicians. Working with so many people on one brief was extremely useful developing my professionalism with people and how I put myself across as a professional. Some of these musicians I have brought into the studio. One musician I have worked with has my images of a Mercedes benz website which promotes signed and unsigned musicians and can be downloaded.

My portfolio at this moment in time is very documentary and reportage based photographs. In a previous crit I had critisisms that my portfolio needs more variation in order for it to be a good photographers portfolio. So this year has so far been for me to develop my portfolio and make it more varied by doing studio shoots and portraiture work. My portfolio could benefit from having a couple of product shots and more studio work as I aim to be working in a studio with a photographer at the end of the third year. i shall continue with my portfolios current form being A2 size print based portfolio.

After finishing third year my plan is to stay in Leeds and work for a local photographer. In preparation for this I have been emailing lots of photographers to try build up some contacts. I think especially musician photographers and studio based photographers. I would want to assist for a couple of years and also do freelance work during this.
